Step 3 of 4

Protect your family tree

Your tree lives on your computer, where only you can change it. RootsMagic helps keep it accurate, private, and safely backed up.

Part of RootsMagic 12, for Windows and Mac. RootsMagic Essentials is free, with no time limit.

Backups with the date and time

Backup file names can include the date and time, so the newest copy is always easy to find.

Open the right tree

The Home and File pages show more about each recent tree, such as its root person.

Online and offline: the best of both

Keep the power, privacy, and freedom of a tree on your own computer, and still work with Ancestry and FamilySearch when you want to.

You decide exactly what to share or sync, down to people, facts, and details. Share a little, share a lot, or keep it all on your computer.

Spot possible problems

Was John really born when his mother was 9 years old? Problem Alerts warn you about possible errors in your data as you look at it. Open the Problem List to fix each one, mark it “not a problem,” or add it to your task list.

Keep names and places clean

DataClean finds and fixes common problems in your names and places. PlaceClean, for example, moves a church or cemetery out of a place name and into its details, and fixes capitalization. You check each fix before anything changes. (Full version.)

Merge duplicates

When the same person turns up twice, RootsMagic finds the likely duplicates and shows them side by side, with matching details in green and conflicts in red. Merge them, mark them “not a match,” or swap which one to keep.

More ways RootsMagic helps

Your tree belongs to you

No one else can change it or “fix” it behind your back. It’s your data, on your computer.

Backups you control

Make a compact backup, with your media files if you choose, and keep it anywhere: another drive, a flash drive, or a cloud backup service.

Private stays private

Mark any fact private, keep private remarks inside { } in a note, and leave living people out of the GEDCOM files and websites you share.

CountyCheck

CountyCheck warns when a county, state, or country didn’t exist yet on the date of an event, and suggests the right one. It covers the US, Canada, the UK, and Australia.

Problem Search

Check your whole tree at once for possible problems, keep a “not a problem” list, and add what it finds to your task list.

Work together with family

When relatives also use RootsMagic, SmartMerge combines each other’s files and keeps both versions when the data disagrees. Compare Files shows two trees side by side. (SmartMerge needs the full version.)
