RootsMagic 8 Community Preview

RootsMagic 8 Community Preview - Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some questions we are frequently asked about RootsMagic 8 Community Preview:

What is a "Community Preview"?

RootsMagic 8 is our latest version of our genealogy and family tree software. We have been working and testing this software for quite some time. Although RootsMagic 8 has already been through extensive development and testing with thousands of users, there is still some "spit n' polish" before we are ready to officially release it. The Community Preview is a chance for us to get feedback from a larger group of testers and a chance for you to get acquainted with the software early.

Is there any cost to participate in the community preview?

There is no cost to participate in the community preview. Each participant will receive a temporary RootsMagic 8 registration key that unlocks all of the features until the end of the testing period.

Will participating give me a free license for RootsMagic 8?

No. However, we are offering free RootsMagic 8 licenses if you purchase a copy of RootsMagic 7 at today's lower cost.

What operating systems are supported?

RootsMagic 8 is available for both Windows and MacOS.

  • Windows 32-bit Windows 7 SP1 through Windows 10.
  • MacOS 64-bit Sierra 10.12 through Big Sur 11.0 with Intel or Apple Silicon M1 CPUs.
What will happen to my old RootsMagic (1-7) software and data?

Previous versions of RootsMagic can be kept intact on your computer. When installing RootsMagic 8, it may ask if you want to remove the older version (i.e. RootsMagic 7). Say NO unless you are really ready to uninstall your previous versions of RootsMagic.

RootsMagic 8 will have a different file format (.rm8) than previous versions (.rmgc). If you have data from a previous version of RootsMagic, you'll want to import that into a new RootsMagic 8 file. This leaves your previous data file unchanged. You can also import a GEDCOM (or any of the other imports we support) into a new RootsMagic 8 database.

How do I share errors, bugs, or suggestions?

To help deal with the volume of feedback that we anticipate we will receive, we have set up a single feedback form that helps us organize and act upon reports from users. You can access it online or you can click the envelope button in the upper-right corner of the RootsMagic 8 screen to access the feedback form directly within the software.

How can I get technical support for the community preview?

We respectfully ask that you do not contact our technical support regarding the preview. Our technicians are still becoming acquainted with the software themselves and are unable to offer any help with it until it is officially released. In the meantime, feel free to join our special Facebook group to discuss the preview with others and to use our feedback form to send in any errors, bugs, or suggestions.

What features from previous versions aren't in the community preview?

Some features from previous version of RootsMagic still require more development and testing before we make them available to the public. They are:

  • RootsMagic To-Go
RootsMagic 8 will already run from a flash drive by just copying it to the drive. The automated interface / utility that copies the files and data is not yet ready.
  • Shareable Drive
RootsMagic 8 can already open and view a file in read-only mode. The ability to automatically "create" the drive and the menu program are not yet ready.
  • Publisher
We want to make sure the all-new report engine is completely stable before testing / releasing the book publishing feature.
  • Custom Reports
We want to make sure the all-new report engine is completely stable before testing / releasing the custom reports feature.
  • Spell-check
The spell-check engine is being rewritten to properly support both Windows and MacOS.
  • RTF export
The rich-text file export for reports is being rewritten to support both Windows and MacOS.
  • CountyCheck
CountyCheck needs more development to support MacOS.

Work continues on these features and they will be added as they are completed. Our current plan is to release RootsMagic 8 minus these missing features and add them in updates when they are ready.
