- Open the person's edit page, then click the Multimedia tab at the top of their page. Click the "Add" button to add a multimedia item, then click "Browse" on the dialog that appears to select a previously scanned image from your hard drive. - Updated: November 30, 2004

- Make sure you are not removing the pictures from your hard drive after you add them to a person.
When you add a photo to a person, RootsMagic just links to the copy of the picture on your hard drive. If you later move or remove the picture from your hard drive RootsMagic will not be able to find it anymore.
You can run the Multimedia List ("Reports > Lists > Multimedia list" from the menu) to get a list of pictures you have added, where RootsMagic thinks those pictures are, and whether RootsMagic can find the picture there. - Updated: November 30, 2004

- You can either:
1. Move the pictures into the same folder name as they were on the old computer. In this case the moved database will still point to the pictures and will automatically link back to them.
2. If you can't (or don't want to) put the pictures into the same folder name, you can put them in whatever folder you want. You can then do "Search > Search and replace" from the RootsMagic menu, and choose to search and replace "Multimedia filenames". Enter the old pathname of your images in the "Search for" field, and enter the new pathname of your images in the "Replace with" field. For example, if your pictures were in C:\My Pictures on the old computer, and in D:\Photographs on the new computer, search for "C:\My Pictures" and replace with "D:\Photographs". - Updated: February 14, 2005

- The problem is that on Windows XP, every username on the computer has their own "My Document" folder named something like:
C:\Documents and Settings\John Doe\My Documents\My Pictures
where "John Doe" is the name of your username on that computer.
If you upgraded from Windows ME (or before), then that folder was just:
C:\My Documents\My Pictures
so RM is not pointing to the actual full path.
You can do "Search > Search and replace" from the RM menu, then choose to search in Multimedia filenames, and search for the old path and replace it with the new path. For example, search for:
C:\My Documents\My Pictures
and replace with
C:\Documents and Settings\John Doe\My Documents\My Pictures - Updated: April 27, 2005
- 5. When I try to scan a picture, it brings up my digital camera or other wrong scanner. How do I make it use the scanner I want? -

- RootsMagic will use the scanner set up as the Windows default.
You can use a program like IrfanView (downloadable for free at www.irfanview.com) to set the default scanner. Use "File > Select Twain source" from the IrfanView menu to set your default scanner. - Updated: November 30, 2004
- 6. Sometimes after I add a picture to a person, the picture seems to disappear. What is happening? -

- When you add a picture to a person, RootsMagic does not store the picture in the database. It simply adds a link to the picture to the person. So if you add a picture that is on a CD, or remove the picture from the hard drive, RootsMagic is pointing to a picture that doesn't exist anymore. You need to store the pictures on the hard drive so they do not disappear. - Updated: November 30, 2004
